Side-by-Side Program – Parent & Child Workforce

The Side-by-Side Program was created to support parents who want to work, gain new skills, and build stability — without having to choose between their children and their career goals. This unique opportunity allows parents to work and earn income in the same environment where their children receive licensed childcare through our partner facilities.

Participants gain hands-on work experience in roles such as childcare assistance, office support, meal preparation, or outreach activities — all within a safe, supportive, and family-centered environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with daily childcare operations, classroom activities, or enrichment programs
• Support administrative or facility-related tasks as assigned
• Participate in workplace readiness and parent development sessions
• Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and teamwork

Qualifications & Requirements

• Must be a parent or guardian seeking employment while needing childcare support
• Must have valid photo ID and Social Security card
• Enrollment through CalWORKs, GAIN, CCRC, or a participating partner program encouraged
• Must be available for part-time or full-time hours and willing to participate in training sessions
• Must have an interest in learning transferable skills for future employment

Program Completion & Next Steps

Upon successful completion, participants may be considered for permanent or extended employment within Johnson Family Support Services or partner childcare programs. Ongoing mentorship and job coaching continue to support each parent’s transition toward self-sufficiency and long-term stability.

It is geared toward CalWORKs, GAIN, and CCRC participants who are motivated to reenter the workforce in a setting that understands and supports family needs — offering a pathway to growth, stability, and balance between work and home life.
